Hungarian Rhapsody

Hungarian Rhapsody

I spent the first two weeks of September in Budapest, with side trips to Amsterdam, Prague, and the Danube Bend (historic Hungarian countryside). Much of the trip was very neat, and I saw and experienced many cool things.

The main reason I was there was the EuroSpeech 99 conference, 5-10 September. The conference was great and I learned a lot, and lots of people came to my presentation. I made lots of good contacts.

I also had a number of problems on this trip. Just after the conference, my valuables were lost from the hotel safe after the conference (computer, passport, plane tickets, some credit cards and cash). I spent most of a week getting a replacement passport and tickets, and dealing with the repercussions of this loss. Sometimes scary, often frustrating, and a lot of extra time and money, but I made it through. The capper was having my luggage lost by the airline on my return flight, and getting home in the middle of Hurricane Floyd.

Anyway, I'm OK, healthy and sane, and dealing with the logistical aftermath of all this excitement. I will add pictures to this web site as soon as I have them available.

Technical comments on the conference can be found on my MIT web site: Updated on 3 October 1999: I've added some pictures to the journal pages. Some of first batch are not real great quality, and I apologize for that, but the scans were done at the developer's and I didn't have control over how they did it. I still have another roll of film coming, hopefully in another week or so, and I will add those pictures as soon as I can manage it.
