Chocorua

Mount Chocorua, 3 October 2001

06:15 leave Boston
09:00 arrive at Kancamagus trailhead (160 miles)
09:20 on the trail

Champney Falls

10:00 Champney Falls is very impressive in springtime, when the water is flowing strong. Now, in autumn, there's not much water, but it's still lovely, and I took lots of pictures here.

Three Sisters

11:00 At the col where Piper Trail joins, there are some fine views.

Looking north at the South Presidentials.

Another view north from the ridge.

Looking south at the rocky summit of Chocorua.

Chocorua summit

11:45 Arrive at the Chocorua summit, and I have it all to myself!

A typical view from the rocky spire.

Two self-portraits using the camera's timer.
Panorama from the tip-top of Chocorua's spire. The first shot is pretty much due north, and they go clockwise, ten shots in all.
A couple more shots looking north, trying different angles.

In less than half an hour, there's a dozen people here, and half a dozen dogs, which lessens the experience some, but I got someone to take pictures of me, better than I can do with the timer.

Two shots looking east towards the Middle Sister ledge.

Competition for the tip-top seems to be universal.
Several flags have been placed at the summit in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 11 September.
A little hand-sized flag at the tip-top of the spire.

A bigger flag on the south shoulder.

Looking south towards Chocorua Lake and Winepesaukee.

Too many people now, time to get going.

A helpful guy took these shots of me as I was preparing to leave.
12:45 Leave the summit of Chocorua. Took these shots on the way down.

13:00 at Brook Trail

13:20 at Bee Line Trail. These sections of descent are VERY STEEP! Took me a while, because I needed to be very careful.

However, the Bee Line Trail is much less used, and in fact it gets quite overgrown in places. In contrast to the popular trails around the summit of Chocorua, I didn't see a soul the entire rest of the way!

14:20 at Bolles Trail. This section is really a road, that parallels a stream, makes for very easy hiking.

15:40 at the height-of-land. This means that the Bolles Trail goes up and over a substantial ridge, that made for a more rigorous experience than I had expected.

A little fire circle at the height-of-land. Nice place to camp.

16:40 Back at car and parking lot. (Make mine a Smutty!)
17:20 leave parking lot
20:30 back in Boston
